Many states in the U.S. are considered “at-will,” but this does not mean you have no rights related to your employment. Federal law prohibits discrimination and harassment based on various categories including but not limited to: gender, race, age, disability, religion, national origin and color. Federal law also prohibits an employer retaliating against its employees who report or complain about discrimination and/or harassment. In addition, federal law prohibits pay differences based on gender, failure to pay wages and overtime.
There are also state laws that prohibit retaliating against an employee who has filed a workers’ compensation claim or who has reported unlawful activities, unsafe working conditions, health-related violations, etc.
